Chevy Avalanche Rolls In

I have quickly learned that my idea of a “normal” cake is something non-existent. There is a rare case where I’m completely unsurprised by someone else’s creativity in what they want in a cake. This was no exception.

My client, the lovely Angela, has all sorts of ideas that I had never thought a cake could be. I also love her since she loves cakes…. just for the sake of a cake. It doesn’t have to be a traditional occasion at all!

She is paying off her truck this month, and what better way to celebrate that load off your back than celebratory sweets! She was very specific about her chrome detailing and how the Victory Red color meant something to her in her personal life. This girl also has good taste as she opted for all buttercream :)

Buttercream cakes always look a little more on the rugged side since the icing can’t be as perfectly smooth as fondant. I’m glad it complimented this theme of an off-road vehicle. You can tell my piping skills are still in the works :)

I was afraid this wouldn’t be a very exciting cake, since it was a sheet cake she chose, but after all the chrome was added, the glinting light added lots of flair. Check out how that silver just shines! I also torted the whole cake with another layer of red buttercream to give it a little surprise inside.

For the windows I wanted to add something special. This was my first attempt at making old fashioned sugar candy, like what lollipops are made from. I found a simple mix and really it was pretty easy. The cooling process was a little trickier, and I wish I had ended up with smoother lines, but for something irregular like this, i think it will just take practice.

So there it is! I got lots of squeals of excitement when I dropped this off, which is ultimately the greatest payoff of them all.
