A January Wedding

Oh dear I’ve been meaning to update this for a month now! Well life happens and exciting things come along and blogs just fall to the end of the list!

I had the honor of creating my first real wedding cake & grooms cake for a friend of ours that deserves more than most people to have the man of their dreams! It was a beautiful location back in the old factory neighborhoods of 4th ave south in Nashville. They’re turning this area around and creating amazing venues and shops that have tons of character inside.

The bride wanted the classic white wedding cake taste with an ivory buttercream. I LOVE when clients choose buttercream. Its just so much tastier! We batted around design ideas for months, and finally she found the perfect one.

Her ideas and theme for the wedding were a combination of rustic elements (such as colored glass vases paired with wild flowers for the centerpieces) and vintage colors & textures (red & teal with several varieties of lace). You can see the cake topper is a unique one that ended up being perfect for the coloring on the cake.

The pearls were the main part of the design, made extremely easier with the buttercream base (sticky!). I combined ivory & oyster tinted pearls of different sizes to give depth and interest to an otherwise monochrome cake. The cake topper greys set off the oyster pearls nicely.

Set on a table of its own, set off by a classy chandelier canister, this was the centerpiece of the room. No pressure!! :) Thank goodness from farther away you can’t see the mistakes!

Here is me…. making some final adjustments following the VERY bumpy ride into this area. ACK! what a nervous ride. I learned a lot about traveling with a cake— next time I will do many things differently. I was lucky that this all turned out well as I was unprepared if something went completely wrong.

The groom’s cake was taken from his career as a music teacher. This is a replica of one of the guitars he actually owns. Really fun to make and put together. My husband came up with the idea of a wooden platform- nice touch!

A closeup of some of the details. Again working with fondant is something I continue to learn about. This particular recipe of cake lent itself to a much “lumpier” surface to work with…. another one of those things that you dont always know till you’re mid-experiment! :)

Baby showers and more weddings on the horizon! Stay tuned!
